Kitchen islands

Have you ever felt shortage of storage space in the kitchen and what about preparation space especially when you are entertaining a few people? Then it's time to consider adding a kitchen island in your kitchen. A kitchen island will give you extra work space for elaborate cooking. It also give you extra storage space for your appliances.

A kitchen island also serve decorative purpose and an ornate island can be a focal point of the kitchen. If your family likes to have breakfast in the kitchen, you can turn an island into a breakfast table by adding a few high stools or chairs.

You can select a top for the kitchen island according to your needs. You can opt for a stationary kitchen island or a movable island so that you can move it wherever you need like near the sink. If sometimes you find the island blocking your space, you can even move it out of the way.

An island can simply be a table or a plumbed, electrified cooking station complete with a sink, cooktop and oven. If space is not a constraint, then a kitchen can have multiple islands, one for cooking and another for eating.

A kitchen island can be small or you can also have plans for a custom kitchen island. A kitchen island can be a simple table or a multilevel island. A multilevel island can have separate areas for cooking, eating and serving, sinks, wine racks etc. Kitchen is a place where lot of wet and messy work take place. A raised level in a multilevel island helps hide the kitchen mess.

In an open kitchen, an island can help demarcate the kitchen space from rest of the house.

Today, everybody wants an island in their kitchen. So, if you are planning for an island, consider two main issues. They are - the countertop and electrical outlets. Countertop depends on utility and matching with your kitchen. Electrical outlets also depend on utility like you want 1 or 2 outlets for your mixer or other appliances.

While considering plans for an island in your kitchen, see to it that there is a minimum distance of three feet between island's any side edge and any other fixture or wall.

A small kitchen island need to be attached to the floor so that it does not tilt or slide hence it's a stationary island but there is no such need for a big and heavy island.
