How to select a kitchen countertop

There are various parameters to consider while selecting countertops for the kitchen. There are scores of colors, patterns and materials to choose from. Kitchens usually have a mix of countertops depending on it's use. To zero in on the final choice, you need to consider factors like- how durable it will be, maintenance, cost, how aesthetically appealing it will be and difficulty in installing it. Let's consider various options one by one.

 

 

Granite
It's very tough, looks beautiful and elegant, high degree of stain and scratch resistance but it's quite expensive and need to be installed by a professional.

Engineered stone
It mimic look of natural stone, offer wider range of colors than natural stone, stain, scratch and heat resistant but seams are visible and need to be installed professionally.

Laminate
It offers wide range of colors and patterns, easy to install, inexpensive and stain resistant but it's not so durable, seams are visible and it's not suitable for wet areas.

 



Ceramic tile
It's economical, offers vast range of designs, glazed tiles are resistant to stains, moisture and scratches but on the flip side, grouting is done between tiles which can be a breeding ground for mold, mildew and bacteria and can get stained. It's not easy to clean the grout. Tiles need high maintenance. They can also get cracked upon impact.

Marble
It's an ideal surface for baking, looks are traditional but it's not scratch and stain resistant and you need an expert to install it.

Solid surface
Vast range of colors and patterns, seamless and blend with integral sinks but it's expensive, installation by

Butcher block
It needs regular oiling, need to be cleaned properly when exposed to raw meat. Besides it's not so suitable for wet areas.

Limestone
Resistant to stain, heat and impact.

Glass
Should not be used in work areas.

Concrete
Heat, stains and scratch resistant, color choice available by adding pigments but it's heavy and need expert to install it. It need to be sealed on a regular basis.

Stainless steel
Looks sleek, modern and professional. It's easy to clean and it's heat resistant but it shows scratches and fingerprints.
